Dr. Julian Fennessy is a global leader in giraffe conservation and co-founder of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF). With more than 25 years of experience in ecology and land management across Africa, Julian has transformed global understanding of giraffe populations and driven international action to prevent their decline.
His PhD research on desert-dwelling giraffe in Namibia revealed unique adaptations and reshaped ecological knowledge of the species. He later led continent-wide surveys that revealed giraffe numbers were far lower than believed — a discovery that catalyzed urgent conservation interventions and elevated giraffes on the global conservation agenda.
As former Co-Chair of the IUCN Giraffe & Okapi Specialist Group, Julian influenced national and international policy. He has authored more than 100 scientific papers and remains a frequent advisor to governments, NGOs, and international bodies. His ability to bridge rigorous science with practical, community-based conservation has made GCF a respected partner worldwide.
Julian’s leadership has positioned giraffes not only as a conservation priority but also as a flagship species for restoring Africa’s savannas. For Kakori, his expertise strengthens species-focused conservation and positions the organization within influential global networks.
